Built by Firefighters, for Firefighters: The Story of the NSFBF

Nova Scotia firefighters run toward danger for free. Most are volunteers. They leave their families, their jobs, and their own comfort to serve their communities — sometimes at great personal cost. But who protects them when crisis hits at home?

That question is what led a group of Nova Scotia firefighters to create the Nova Scotia Firefighters Benevolent Fund (NSFBF) — a provincial fund dedicated entirely to helping active firefighters and their families when they need it most.

A Fund Built from the Inside

The NSFBF was founded by firefighters who understood from personal experience that serving your community doesn't make you immune to hardship. Injuries happen. Serious illness strikes. Financial pressure mounts when a firefighter can't work during recovery. Families struggle in silence because there's no obvious place to turn.

What Nova Scotia lacked was a single, province-wide fund dedicated solely to its firefighters. Other provinces had benevolent funds. Nova Scotia didn't — until the NSFBF was established.

Today, the NSFBF is a registered Canadian charity (Charity No: 793333071RR0001, Registry of Joint Stocks No: 3327571) operating across the entire province, staffed entirely by volunteers.

Entirely Volunteer-Run. Zero Government Funding.

The NSFBF operates on a principle that matters to those who founded it: every dollar donated goes to firefighter families in crisis. Not administration. Not salaries. Not overhead funded by government grants.

The fund receives no government funding whatsoever. It exists entirely because of donations from businesses and individuals who believe Nova Scotia's firefighters deserve a safety net.

The board of directors — based across Nova Scotia — gives their time freely. The disbursement committee, with representatives from Cape Breton to the South Shore, reviews applications without compensation. This is firefighters and community members looking after their own.

How the Fund Works

The NSFBF provides assistance through three programs, each designed to match the reality of what firefighter families actually face:

Applications are confidential and go through fire department chiefs — protecting the dignity of recipients while ensuring funds reach those who need them quickly.

The Gap the NSFBF Fills

In Nova Scotia, the majority of firefighters are volunteers. They don't earn a salary for their service. When a volunteer firefighter is injured on a call or faces a medical crisis, they often have no employment-based disability coverage, no sick pay, and limited options for financial relief.

The NSFBF exists precisely for this gap. It's a financial backstop — built by people who know what it means to serve, and who believe that service shouldn't come with the risk of financial ruin for a firefighter's family.
