NSFBF Partners with DoorDash to Support Firefighters During Medical Crisis

When a Nova Scotia firefighter or their family member is dealing with serious illness or injury, the logistics of getting through each day can become overwhelming. Travel for treatment, hospital stays, and medical appointments often mean being far from home — and far from a kitchen. The NSFBF has partnered with DoorDash to help with exactly that.

What the Partnership Provides

Through this partnership, eligible firefighters — or family members of firefighters — who are away from home due to illness, injury, or medical treatment can receive DoorDash meal credits to cover the cost of food. It's a practical form of support that removes one burden during an already difficult time.

This could mean a firefighter recovering from an injury who can't cook, a family travelling out of their community for a loved one's medical appointment, or a caregiver staying near a hospital. When the focus needs to be on health and recovery, meals shouldn't be a source of stress.

How to Access This Support

DoorDash meal credits are available through the NSFBF's standard application process. This support is disbursed in line with our three assistance programs — Immediate Need, Ongoing Need, and Extraordinary Need — depending on the circumstances.

If you are an active Nova Scotia firefighter or a family member of one, and you are away from home due to illness, injury, or medical treatment, here's what to do:

01

Contact Your Department Chief

All NSFBF applications — including requests for DoorDash meal support — are initiated through your department chief.

02

Apply Through the Standard Process

Your chief will submit an application to the NSFBF on your behalf. The disbursement committee will review it in line with the relevant assistance program.

03

Receive Your Credits

Once approved, DoorDash credits are disbursed confidentially, as with all NSFBF assistance. The identity of recipients is always protected.

If you're unsure whether you qualify or have questions about the process, you can also reach the NSFBF directly at [email protected] or (902) 536-1901.

Why This Partnership Matters

The NSFBF was built on the principle that firefighters shouldn't have to face hardship alone. That principle extends beyond the financial — it applies to the practical realities of illness and recovery too. When a firefighter or their family is dealing with a health crisis, food is a basic need that often gets overlooked. Making sure they have access to a decent meal removes one small but real burden during an incredibly difficult time.

We're grateful to DoorDash for recognizing the value of Nova Scotia's firefighting community and for stepping up as an active partner. This is exactly the kind of corporate partnership the NSFBF looks for — practical, direct, and genuinely beneficial to the people we serve.

For Businesses: What Corporate Partnership Looks Like

The DoorDash partnership is a good example of what corporate support of the NSFBF can look like. It doesn't always have to be a cash donation. Companies with services or products that can benefit firefighters and their families are encouraged to reach out. We're always open to conversations about how to put support where it's needed most.
