How to Apply for NSFBF Assistance: A Guide for Firefighters and Their Families

If you're an active Nova Scotia firefighter — or a family member of one — facing an acute crisis, the NSFBF may be able to help. This guide walks through exactly how the process works, what to expect, and how to get started.

Asking for help is never easy. The NSFBF application process is designed to be straightforward, dignified, and — above all — completely confidential.

Who Is Eligible?

The NSFBF provides financial assistance to active Nova Scotia firefighters and their immediate families during times of acute crisis. This includes situations such as:

  • Sudden illness or injury, whether or not it occurred in the line of duty
  • Injury sustained while responding to an emergency
  • Financial hardship during an extended recovery or rehabilitation period
  • Extraordinary or catastrophic circumstances that create severe financial pressure

If you're unsure whether your situation qualifies, the best first step is simply to talk to your fire department chief. They can help assess the situation against the fund's three programs.

The Three Programs

The NSFBF provides assistance through three distinct programs, each designed to match the nature and duration of the need:

Immediate Need

For urgent situations requiring rapid financial assistance — think sudden injury, acute illness, or an unexpected emergency that can't wait.

Ongoing Need

For situations that extend over weeks or months — long-term recovery, rehabilitation, or sustained hardship where a family needs continued support.

Extraordinary Need

For rare, catastrophic circumstances that fall outside the standard criteria but still represent genuine, serious need that the fund is able to address.

The Application Process, Step by Step

01

Contact Your Department Chief

All applications go through your fire department chief. This is the starting point. Your chief knows the process, can help assess your situation, and will initiate the application on your behalf. If you're unsure who to contact or don't feel comfortable approaching your chief directly, you can also reach the NSFBF at [email protected] or (902) 536-1901.

02

Situation Assessment

Your chief will review the situation against the NSFBF's three programs — Immediate, Ongoing, or Extraordinary Need — and determine how to proceed. Official application forms are available for download from our Apply page.

03

Application Submission

The chief submits the completed application to the NSFBF board for review. The application goes through the disbursement committee, which includes regional representatives across the province — from Cape Breton to the South Shore.

04

Confidential Approval and Disbursement

Once approved, funds are disbursed as quickly as possible. Throughout the entire process, the identity of the recipient is kept strictly confidential. No one outside the review process will know who applied or received assistance.

Confidentiality: A Core Commitment

The NSFBF takes confidentiality seriously. We understand that asking for financial help during a difficult time can feel vulnerable. The identities of all applicants and recipients are protected throughout the process. This isn't just policy — it's a fundamental part of how the fund operates and how it was designed from the beginning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be a paid firefighter to apply?

No. The NSFBF supports all active Nova Scotia firefighters, including the many who serve as volunteers. The majority of firefighters in Nova Scotia are volunteers, and they are equally eligible for assistance.

Can family members apply directly?

Applications go through the firefighter's department chief. If you are a family member and are unsure how to proceed, contact the NSFBF directly and we will guide you through the next steps.

How quickly does the fund respond?

The NSFBF works to respond to applications as quickly as possible, particularly for Immediate Need situations. Response times depend on the nature and urgency of the request.

Is there a limit on how much assistance I can receive?

Each application is reviewed on its own circumstances. The disbursement committee assesses what level of support is appropriate given the situation and the fund's current capacity. Our Disbursement Policy is available for download if you'd like to review the full details.
