Support Nova Scotia Firefighters Before the Year Ends

Nova Scotia's firefighters answer the call all year round, most of them as volunteers. When one of them faces a crisis of their own, the Nova Scotia Firefighters Benevolent Fund steps in. A gift before December 31 helps us be there for them, and counts toward your 2026 charitable tax credit.

Where Your Gift Goes

The NSFBF was built by firefighters, for firefighters. When an active Nova Scotia firefighter or their family is hit by a sudden crisis, such as a serious injury, a serious illness or the loss of their home, our Immediate Need, Ongoing Need and Extraordinary Need programs provide fast, confidential support.

We receive no government funding. The fund is run entirely by volunteers, so your donation goes to the firefighters and families who need it, not to salaries or overhead.

Why Give Before December 31

Donations to a registered Canadian charity earn a non-refundable tax credit at both the federal and provincial level. A few things worth knowing as the year closes:

  • Gifts made by December 31 count for 2026. Donations are claimed for the calendar year in which they are made, so a gift this December goes on your 2026 return.
  • Couples can combine their receipts. You and your spouse or common-law partner can pool your donations and either of you can claim them.
  • Nothing is lost if you don't claim it right away. Unclaimed donations can be carried forward and claimed in any of the next five years.
  • We issue official donation receipts. The NSFBF is a registered charity, No. 793333071RR0001. To request a receipt for a PayPal gift, email [email protected] with your name, the date and the amount.

This is general information, not tax advice. The Canada Revenue Agency's information for donors has the details, and your accountant can confirm what applies to you.

GivingTuesday is December 1

GivingTuesday, the global day of giving, falls on Tuesday, December 1, 2026. If you are choosing a cause that day, choose the people who show up when your family needs them most.

Ways to Give

  • A gift in your will: a legacy gift costs nothing today and can be the largest gift most of us will ever make. Read about leaving a gift to the NSFBF in your will.
